De Witt & Co. :: Postcards :: Valentine's Day Postcards
Welcome to our "Valentine's Day Postcards" department! St. Valentine's Day is perhaps the most popular holiday of all, spanning both religious and secular beliefs. Traditionally, the observance of Valentine's Day hasn't been altered in hundreds of years, giving collectors ample artifacts to seek. There is historical evidence of Valentine's Day being associated with lovers all the way back to medieval times.
There are no obvious signs of just who the day is named for, however. There was a Valentine of Terni, a Valentine of Rome... even a Valentine of Africa, all of which history suggests were martyred on February 14th. So, perhaps all of the Valentines had a role in what we observe as Saint Valentine's Day, today... that of a lover's holiday.
Valentine postcards are quintessential for the postcard collector. Many famous artists have created masterpieces that fit in a small, 3X5 rectangle. Colorful cupids, charming children, fantastic floras and even amiable animals can all be found gracing the front of a Valentine's Day postcard. Some of the German pieces, elegant and heavily embossed, are some of the finest postcards around.
